Thomas Rickard was born at St. Domenic, Cornwall on 5 October 1860 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 14 September 1876. Reaching his majority with Invincible on 1 November 1878 he was further advanced Able Seaman with the same vessel on 1 August 1887. Seeing service with a number of vessels including Miranda and Peacock he was Petty Officer Class I with H.M.S. Forte from November 1895.

This vessel took part in the Benin Expedition of 1897, providing both bluejackets and marines for the land-based portion of the advance. Rickard left Forte in August 1898 and was pensioned in November. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 28 September 1904 and was mobilised for service in the Great War on 2 August 1914.

Posted to the Defensively Armed Merchant Ship Crown of Aragon he was with her when she was requisitioned for transport duties and transported troops from the UK to the Mediterranean. Rickards left her after the first journey in March 1915 and after a spell ashore joined the guardship Hermione.

His final posting afloat was with Donegal between December 1915 to January 1916 after which he went ashore where he served until demobilisation on 21 July 1919.
