Pair: Private A. Parker, 19th Hussars

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 2 clasps, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (2009, Pte A. Parker, 19th Hussars); Khedive's Star 1884, unnamed as issued, edge bruising and pitting from Star, otherwise very fine (2)

One of 135 Abu Klea bars to the regiment.

Alfred Parker was born in 1860 in Hammersmith, London and attested with the 19th Hussars on 1 May 1879 at age 19 after working as a grocer. He was posted to Egypt along with his regiment in August 1882 where he was involved in what Winston Churchill called "The most savage and bloody action ever fought in the Sudan by British troops….". At the Battle of Abu Klea on 17 January 1885, the 19th Hussars were the only cavalry regiment to be mounted on horses rather than on camels. During the battle, the main body of the regiment was positioned to the left of the square formation with a smaller detachment to the right. The Dervishes eventually broke the square but the battle still ended with a British victory. After returning to England in June 1886, Parker transferred to the 1st Class Army Reserve that August until his discharge in May 1891. He has confirmed entitlement to these medals and clasp combination; sold together with copied research.
