Henry Allen Smith was born in Chelsea in 1856, his parents living at 10 Pomona Place, Parsons Green. A plumber, painter and glazier, Smith served in the 1st Middlesex Engineers and enlisted in the King's Royal Rifle Corps at Winchester in December 1882. He served on campaign in Egypt and Sudan from April 1883-August 1884 and was discharged in November 1894.
