1 Company of the Queen's Own Sappers and Miners was present at the Battle of Tofrek. Alongside a Company of the Royal Engineers they were constructing the fortified zeriba when the Mahdist army attacked, resulting in a number of them being caught out of position and suffering relatively heavy casualties.
