The Queen's South Africa Medal awarded to Private W.J. Mathews, 14th Hussars, who drowned whilst on active service

Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 7 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901 (3657. Pte. W. J. Mathews. 14/Hrs.), light edge bruising, otherwise good very fine

William J. Mathews served with the 14th (King's) Hussars in the Anglo-Boer War, where he was drowned at Tributary Drift in the Pongola River in South Africa only aged 19-20 years old. The memorial plaque subsequently erected at a church in Gloucestershire reads, 'In memory of L.Cpl William Mathews, 14th Hussars of this Parish who was drowned on service at Pongola Drift South Africa 2nd March 1901, erected by his comrades'; sold together with copied research, in which his service number is incorrectly transcribed from an original record.
