Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 7 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, Belfast (98945 Dvr: W.J. Martin, 76th Bty, R.F.A.), unofficial rivets between six and seventh clasps, contact marks, good very fine

William John Martin was born at Cardiff in 1875 and enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 22 August 1893. Posted to India in December 1896, Martin served there until December 1898, seeing action on the Northwest Frontier in that time with the 10th Field Battery (Medal and Clasp).

Posted to South Africa on 1 January 1900, Martin joined the 76th Battery and served there for the next two years. In that time they served largely with the columns under Ian Hamilton and later Bruce Hamilton, being in action at Diamond Hill under the former.

Martin was tried and imprisoned from 23 March until 4 May 1901 for an unspecified offence. The medal roll and his service papers confirm he is not entitled to the Belfast clasp. He was discharged on 17 July 1909; sold together with copied research.

Further entitled to a King's South Africa Medal with 2 clasps.
