The Queen's South Africa Medal awarded to Private E. Hayes, who deserted and was imprisoned no less than four times during his service

Edward Hayes was born in 1869 in Radcliffe, Lancashire and attested with the 20th Hussars aged 21 from the Duke of Lancashire's Own Yeomanry. He deserted and was subsequently imprisoned on four occasions from 1891 until 1895, after the fourth instance having all prior service forfeited. Hayes was stationed in India from 1895 to 1901, during which time he had his forfeited service restored.
Hayes was ordered to South Africa in December 1901 and remained there until March 1903, re-engaging at Bloemfontein to complete 21 years of service before departing South Africa. Hayes was discharged in 1905 after being stationed in Egypt for a year, and after his discharge intended to live in Manchester; sold together with copied research.
