Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal (4030 Pte. P. Sibbick. 1/Rl. Drgns), good very fine
Oliver Sibbick was born on 4 August 1878 at Carisbrooke, Newport, Isle of Wight, the son of Robert and Emily Sibbing of Plaish Farm, Carisbrooke. Working as a groom prior to attesting on 23 November 1896 it is perhaps understandable that Sibbick joined a Cavalry Regiment, attesting with the 1st Royal Dragoons.
This Regiment saw action in the push to relieve Ladysmith, notably at Colenso and Spion Kop however it seems that Sibbick was not to serve in the country for long after the relief. He was back in Britain in time to appear on the 1901 census at Shorncliffe Barrack, Cheriton, Kent.
Returning to the Isle of Wight after the war Sibbick settled at Cowes, appearing on the 1911 census living at Victoria Road, East Cowes and working as a Constable 1st Class. Promoted Inspector by 1914 he was still in service on the outbreak of the Great War and is mentioned in the Isle of Wight County Press bidding farewell to his colleagues who had been called up to fight.
Sibbick retired to 43 Kipling, Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire, appearing upon the 1939 census there as a 'Retired Inspector', he died there in 1957; sold together with copied research.
