Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, (3664 Pte W. Oliver. 20th Hussars), very fine
William Oliver was born at Deptford, Kent and enlisted into the 20th Hussars on 16 January 1893. He saw service in India from 11 September 1895 before leaving for South Africa in December 1901. The 20th Hussars served alongside the 3rd Hussars as part of Colonel Nixon's Brigade until 9 August 1902.
Oliver returned home on 10 August 1902 and remained there serving until 29 January 1903 when he joined the Army Reserve. Discharged on 15 January 1905 he returned to service on outbreak of the Great War.
Oliver joined the King Edward's Horse on 8 January 1915, serving at home until 14 May 1915. Entering the war in France on 15 May 1915 he received a gunshot wound to the right thigh just ten days later and was consequently sent home on 31 May. Oliver transferred to the Labour Corps on 7 July 1917 until he was discharged on 17 March 1919.
