Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (3704 Pte C. Wigzell. 20th Hussars) very fine
Charles Wigzell was born at Deptford, Kent, and was a labourer prior to joining the army at Aldershot on 27 April 1893. He served in India from 11 September 1895 before being posted to South Africa on 13 December 1901. There, despite arriving somewhat late in the conflict, they made up for lost time by fighting several highly successful actions against de Wet's commando. Notably the Harrismith drive netted over 600 prisoners and a valiant stand by a surrounded rearguard company at Strathnairn.
Leaving South Africa after the end of the war on 17 April 1903, Wigzell was posted to Egypt and there remained until December 1904. Returning home on 15 December, he was finally discharged on 26 April 1905.
