Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1902 (2997 Pte A. Nevin. 1st Border Regt), light contact wear, very fine
Note the recipient is entitled to all three clasps however he is further entitled to a Natal clasp and King's South Africa Medal with both clasps.
Arthur Nevin was born at Strangford, County Down, Ireland on 25 July 1870, the son of James and Susan Nevin. Enlisting at Camp Lowther on 2 July 1890 under the assumed name of William Fitzsimons. Nevin was posted to India the next year and whilst their served on the Waziristan 1894-95 expedition, earning the medal and clasp to go with it. His service papers noted his presence in Waziristan from 8 November 1894-17 March 1895.
Returning to Britain on 24 January 1898 Nevin was posted to South Africa with the 1st Battalion for service in the Anglo-Boer War. Arriving in the country in March 1900 he was to serve there for the next two years, the Battalion saw heavy fighting there notably at the Battle of Nooitgedacht. The next year they saw further action against De La Ray at the Battle of Middlefontein in January 1901.
Nevin, who was by now going by that name, was posted to India in April 1902 for the next two years. Returning to South Africa in 1904 he served attached to 33rd Company, Army Service Corps from 31 March 1905. After service in Gibraltar he returned to Britain and was discharged at Aldershot on 1 July 1911.
He joined the Special Reserve with the Norfolk Regiment but there is no indication that he was present for service during the Great War.
