George Young was born at Deptford, Kent and worked as a musician prior to enlisting as a Boy at the age of only fourteen on 30 April 1891. Joining the 2nd Battalion in India on 22 February 1892, he was appointed Bandsman there the next year on 12 June. Appointed Private on 1 August 1898 it was with this rank that Young participated in the British response to the disturbances around the North-West Frontier in 1898.
Posted to Burma between 30 April 1901 and 25 March 1903, Young returned to Britain after this posting. Here he was promoted Lance Sergeant and appointed Orderly Room Clerk on 12 December 1904 and held the appointment until 29 July 1905. Posted back to India on 19 September 1905, here Young began to suffer from disciplinary issues, notably drunkenness. He was reverted to the rank of Private on 5 October 1906 and returned to Britain a month later, being discharged on 26 November 1906.
