David Lewin was born in Great Gaddesen, Hertfordshire in 1834 and attested with the 70th Foot (East Surrey) aged 25 at Liverpool. Lewin was stationed in New Zealand from 1863 until 1865 and there saw action at Waiko, Taranki, and Rungcairhea. He was recommended for a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1877, and was discharged the following year at Netley due to general disability after having served for nearly 19 years. Lewin returned to Great Gaddeson where he lived as an army pensioner with his wife and family until his death in September 1884; sold together with copied research.
