New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1863-1864 (E. J. Metters, Lg. Smn., H.M.S. Miranda), nearly extremely fine and scarce
One of 92 medals to H.M.S. Miranda dated 1863 to 1864.
Edward John Metters was born at Mayo, Ireland on 27 May 1838 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman on 10 August 1853. Posted to Miranda on 21 October 1860 he was advanced Leading Seaman with her on 1 January 1861.
Employed during the New Zealand Wars she acted as a troopship landing soldiers at Waikato Island. The settlement where they landed was renamed 'Miranda' in honour of the vessel. Metters was further promoted Gunner's Mate with Miranda on 1 May 1864. Posted to Cambridge in 1865, he finally joined Northumberland as Chief Gunner's Mate on 14 August 1868; sold together with copied service papers.
