Arthur Scantlebury was born on 8 March 1870 at South Haish, Devon and joined the Royal Navy on 6 March 1885 as Boy 2nd Class. He served as Petty Officer aboard New Zealand from 24 June 1905-17 June 1907, when earning his Naval Good Shooting Medal on her 9.2 inch Breech-Loading Gun At the Messina Earthquake in 1908 he confirmed as having landed from H.M.S. Sutlej for the relief operations. He then joined Carnarvon from 12 May 1914-31 December 1916. With Carnarvon he was to see action at that the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December 1914. Here she steamed into action alongside the two battlecruisers, Invincible and Inflexible. Their principal opponents being the armoured cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. With the firepower of the battlecruisers behind them the British ripped the German ships apart sinking Scharnhorst first as she attempted to close, taking Admiral Von Spee with her. Gneisenau fought until she ran out of ammunition but sank shortly afterwards.

Scantlebury was invalided in March 1917 from Vivid I due to a fracture injury and died at Clevedon, Somerset in April 1956.
