Gordon Thomas was born at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, on 2 February 1898 and commenced his naval service as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. Impregnable in December 1913. Ashore at the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to the Battleship Emperor of India in October 1914 he served with her for most of the war, being advanced Able Seaman on 23 March 1916.

Going ashore in 1918 Thomas joined the crew of the minelayer Ferret and served with her until the end of the war. Seeing service with various ships including Comus, Tyrant and Barham he was advanced Petty Officer in 1926. Awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in March 1931 and Chief Petty Officer with Courageous on 5 November 1935. Thomas was unfortunately diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and invalided from service on 3 November 1937.
