Alfred Colbourne was born on 5 March 1892 at Bournemouth, Hampshire and was a railway porter upon his joining the Royal Navy on 7 September 1910. During the Great War he served variously aboard Desperate and Hydra, being awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in September 1925. Colbourne was made Stoker Petty Officer in December 1927 whilst aboard Furious but was discharged ashore on 3 December 1930 having been rated 'mentally unstable'.
