(x) A Great War group of three to Sergeant E. E. Smith, 18th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force who was not only wounded at Gallipoli on 22 August 1915 but was gassed in France on 17 July 1918

Ewen Ernest Smith was born on 29 November 1897 at Dulebrae, Palmers Oakey, New South Wales, Australia. He was a Labourer prior to enlisting at Liverpool, N.S.W., on 13 March 1915., leaving Australia on 25 June 1915 for Gallipoli and suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm on 22 August 1915 and was sent to Mudros. Returning to duty on 16 October 1915 and was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion 8 March 1916, and was sent to France from Alexandria on 19 March 1916 and landed at Marseilles on 26 March 1916. Smith was promoted to Corporal on 13 November 1916, and was promoted to Sergeant on 1 September 1917. Gassed on 17 July 1918 and was wounded a further time on 5 October 1918 Smith began his return to Australia from England on 30 September 1919 and was finally discharged on 29 December 1919.

Re-enlisting at Bathurst, New South Wales on 16 June 1942 into 23rd (N.S.W.) Bn. Volunteer Defence Corps he was discharged on 30 December 1945 having not seen any overseas service.; sold together with a 9ct gold Homebush Patriotic Association medal (Sergt E. E. Smith,) engraved and a uniform riband bar for the three medals.
