John Fitzgerald was born in 1893 and was a car cleaner on the Liverpool Tramways living at home at 62 Phythian Street, Liverpool upon his joining The King's Regiment on 5 August 1914. He served overseas with the 9th Battalion and was mortally wounded on by a gunshot wound to the chest on 25 September 1916. That Battle came a year to the day from their actions at Loos the previous autumn and saw the unit a year to the day since their attack on the first day of the Battle of Loos. This time they surged from the village of Flers, towards Gueudecourt. The victory was secured but at heavy cost. Fitzgerald died of his wounds on 7 October 1916 and is buried in the St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
