King's South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (2969 Pte. W. Rylands. 7th Drgn: Gds:), good very fine
William Rylands was born at Dublin on 1868 and enlisted with the 5th Dragoon Guards at Ashton-under-Lyme on 8 July 1886. He saw Home Service until 10 November 1892 when he joined the Army Reserve from which he was discharged in 1898. Rylands was recalled for service in the Anglo-Boer War on 4 July 1900 and posted to South Africa on 15 July.
The Regiment saw action during the invasion of Cape Colony, helping to clear the invaders from the state. They later saw heavy service during the Guerrilla phase of the conflict including a notable action with General Elliot's Column near Deilfontein on 1 June 1902. Rylands returned from South Africa on 2 August 1902 and was discharged the next month on 30 September.
