John Doubleday was born at Lambeth on 21 January 1866 and joined the Royal Navy on 21 January 1878. He served on Woodlark from 24 February 1884-25 March 1887 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Chatham on 3 October 1903 but is noted as re-enrolling on 18 July 1908 from 3 October 1908. Doubleday was with Pembroke from 2-24 August 1914 and then with King George from 25 August 1914-17 February 1918 with a final bout of service on Pembroke until 17 April 1918 when he was invalided.

Doubleday was awarded the 4th Class Russian Medal of St George for services at the Battle of Jutland.
