Joseph Henry Swain was born at Bognor on 4 November 1863 and enlisted on 8 April 1880. Serving aboard Invincible for the Egyptian campaign between 1 April 1882-21 December 1885 he went on to serve with Excellent between December 1885-December 1886. Promoted Petty Office with Active he left her on 6 December 1889, undertaking further brief spells with Vernon and Excellent finishing on Vernon between 4 May 1890-28 April 1893.
Advanced Acting Boatswain on the 29 April 1893 he was Pensioned as an Other Rank on 4 November 1913. Returning to the colours Swain served aboard Vulcan for charge of Dundee submarine base on 20 September 1914. He was was commissioned Lieutenant on 15 February 1916 and further promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 15 February 1924 in recognition of services during the war, dying on 18 December 1924.
