The uniquely named Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque awarded to Private W. F. Elston, 6th (Pioneer) Battalion, South Wales Borderers who was killed in action at the Lys River on 9 April 1918
Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (Wilfred Frank Elston), pitting, polished, very fine
Wilfred Frank Elston was born at Barry, Glamorgan in July 1899, the son of George and Elizabeth Elston. Enlisting with the South Wales Borderers Elston was posted to France for the final phase of the Great War. Joining No. 18 Platoon, 'C' Company, 6th (Pioneer) Battalion he was with them as they moved up to positions on the Lys River prior to the Battle of Lys. Elston was killed here on 9 April 1918 and is commemorated upon the Ploegsteert Memorial; sold together with a copied Commonwealth War Graves Certificate and census data.
