(x) The British War Medal awarded to Brigadier-General J. J. MacMahon, Headquarters 55th Division attached 2nd Canadian Division, Royal Artillery

John Joseph MacMahon was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and commissioned Lieutenant with the Royal Artillery on 23 February 1881. Promoted Captain on 1 October 1889 and appointed Adjutant of Militia Artillery on 15 January 1894.
MacMahon had advanced as far a Colonel by the outbreak of the Great War, entering the action with the 55th (West Lancashire) Division as temporary Brigadier-General. With this unit he further served attached to the 2nd Canadian Division and is additionally noted as the first Brigadier-General commanding the Artillery for the 73rd Division on 8 November 1916. Retiring before the end of the war, on 12 April 1918 MacMahon was granted the honorary rank of Brigadier-General; sold together with copied research including M.I.C., Army lists and a note of the Divisional Headquarters Officers of 73rd Division.
