Arthur Hugh Wooller was born in 1887, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Wooller of New Eltham, Kent. Enlisting with 9th Battalion (Queen Victoria's Rifles), London Regiment on 11 May 1915 and entered the war in France on 1 February 1916 serving until 9 July with the service number 4730 before being reassigned the number 391679. Wooller's first gallantry award was gazetted with the awards for August 1917 when the Battalion was engaged at the Battle of Passchendaele.
Transferring to 34th Battalion, London Regiment with the service number 880610 on 1 August 1918 Wooller saw out the rest of the war with them. His second award was gazetted with the awards for the actions of September 1918 during the Hundred Days advance. At some stage he was wounded, being awarded a Silver War Badge, number 469388, Wooller was discharged on 12 July 1919.
