M.M. London Gazette 27 October 1916 (France). The Appendix to the Regimental History offers the following citation:

'As a Company [message] runner never failed to deliver his messages, having frequently had to pass through heavy barrages to do so.'

William Scarborough was born at Leyton and joined the Royal West Kent Regiment in September 1899, serving in South Africa during the Boer War from 1 September 1901-4 November 1902. During the Great War he served in France from 13 September 1914. Besides winning his M.M., he was wounded on three occasions, these being a gunshot wound to the hip (23 April 1915), gunshot wound to hand and left leg (severe) (20 July 1916) and a further gunshot wound to the left leg.
