Frederick Arthur Starkey was born at Wolverhampton in January 1886, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Starkey. Working as a Roller for Jones' Corrugated Iron Company prior to enlistment Starkey lived at 13 Princes Road, Ellesmere Port, Chester. Attesting on 28 August he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner. Promoted Bombardier on 19 May 1916 he reverted to Gunner at his own request on 9 October of that year and at the same time was posted to 1/2 Clyde Territorial Royal Garrison Artillery with the number 326732.
Finally posted overseas on 16 January 1917 to 216 Anti-Aircraft Section before transferring to No. 2 Aircraft Depot, Candas on 30 August where he was likely involved in the depot's air defences. Joining 'G' Anti-Aircraft Battery on 27 October 1917 he served with them until 10 February 1918. Starkey later saw action with 'M' Battery as part of Third Army during the German Spring Offensive. Invalided with Muscular Rheumatism and Myalgia via 5th and 6th General Hospitals he arrived in Britain on 13 January 1919. Transferred to the reserve on 1 March 1919 he returned to Chester living at 25 Endfield Road, Ellesmere port; sold together with copied research including M.I.C. and Service Papers.
