John Clegg was born at Shaw, Lancashire the son of Mrs. H. Clegg, of 41B Shaw Rd, Royton, Lancashire. Enlisting with the Manchester Regiment at Royton he was posted at first with the 27th Battalion. Later posted to the 22nd (7th City) Battalion Clegg was serving with this unit when he was wounded on 13 May 1917 while the Battalion was involved in the Battle of Bullecourt. Taken to No. 3 Casualty Clearing station Clegg was able to survive his wound and soon transferred to 3rd Battalion and later 11th Battalion.
Clegg was stationed with 11th Battalion in February 1918 when he was killed in action on 16 February 1918. At this point 11th Battalion's war diary notes that they were in the line and preparing for night operations. Clegg is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe; sold together with copied M.I.C. and a printed blog post relating to the 11th Battalion, Manchester Regiment as well as a Manchester Regiment Cap Badge.
