Winifred Powell Protheroe (nee Lewis) was born at Brecon in 1876, the daughter of Margret Lewis. Marrying Gwilym Protheroe in Merthyr Tydfil the couple lived at Merthyr Road, Hirwaun. At some stage Protheroe joined the Merchant Marine as a Stewardess and she remained in this role after the war and by 1924 was serving aboard the P&O group steamer Bendigo; sold together with copied research including census data, M.I.C. and extracts from the Lloyds Register as well as an original corresponding riband bar, slips of issue for the Mercantile Marine War Medal and a named Authority to Wear slip.
