Pair: Gunner A. Beckingham, Royal Marine Artillery, who served aboard Princess Royal at the Battle of Jutland

British War and Victory Medals (R.M.A.14594 Gr. A. Beckingham.), very fine (4)

Thomas Jiggins was born at Barking on 16 May 1893. During the Great War he served aboard Inflexible from 26 October 1916 until his demob in February 1919. On 1 February 1918, she collided with the British submarine K22 off the Isle of May with minor damage.

Arthur Beckingham was born at Alton, Hampshire on 25 October 1897 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Artillery on 26 April 1915. He joined Princess Royal on 1 January 1916 and served aboard her during the Battle of Jutland. Princess Royal was hit nine times during the battle – six times by Derfflinger during the "Run to the South", twice by Markgraf during the "Run to the North", and once by Posen just after II Battle Squadron appeared – with 22 killed and 81 injured. She fired 230 main-gun shells, as her visibility was often impaired by the funnel smoke and fires aboard Lion. She was credited with three hits on Lützow and two on Seydlitz.

Jiggins may well have shared in the terror aboard at 1611hrs when a torpedo was spotted headed straight for her, but thankfully it passed underneath.
