Four: Private H. Kirkham, 9th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), who was killed in action on 26 September 1916 during an attack at Monquet Farm

Harry Kirkham was born at Calverton, Nottinghamshire in October 1884, the son of James and Annie Kirkham of 151 Station Road, Ilkeston. Employed as a coal miner prior to enlistment- likely with Mapperley Colliery as he is listed upon their war memorial, Kirkham joined 9th Battalion at Gallipoli on 14 November 1915. At this time they were in the line around Jepson's Post and moved little until finally being evacuated to Imbros on 18 December 1915. After the end of the Gallipoli campaign the Battalion moved to France landing in Marseilles on 10 July. They took part in attack on 26 September on the Schwaben, Zollern and Joseph trenches at Monquet Farm. They managed to take their objectives and even advanced further but suffered appalling losses with as many as 600 men becoming casualties. Kirkham was among the dead and is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial and Mapperley Colliery Memorial; sold together with copied research including M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details and extracts relating to the 9th Battalion at Gallipoli and the Somme.
