Zululand
Military Mail
1891 (Apr.) partly printed 1st Battn. The Royal Scots envelope to Pietermaritzburg, from "No. 1306 Pt. Pearce", bearing uncancelled 1891 Natal Postal Fiscal 1d. dull mauve which has been disallowed and showing circular-framed "2d" handstamp alongside with, on reverse, Durban (18.4) and G.P.O. Natal (20.4) datestamps. Also 1891 (27 June) Proclamation (folded) which validated these overprinted revenue stamps for postal usage. Photo
Note: This is one of at least three such covers sent in April 1891 from soldiers of the Regiment. All have been treated similarly.
The troops whose letters were affected objected and demanded their money back. This led to a high level dispute between Zululand and Natal authorities regarding the validity of these specific stamps for postage. The troops were eventually reimbursed and the Zululand proclamation was issued.
