Zululand
Military Mail
1888 (11 Sept.) envelope to England, headed "From No. 263 Pte. T. Clayton C Company 1st N.S. Regt. Entonjaneni", countersigned by Commanding Officer and bearing 1888 1d. lilac cancelled by "post office/entonjianeni" c.d.s. and showing, on reverse, Eshowe (17.9), Lower Tugela (17.9), Durban (18.9) and part Maidenhead arrival c.d.s. (16.10); the envelope with a few small faults though a rare cover from a member of the detachment of the North Staffordshire Regiment sent to take Chief Dinizulu prisoner. Photo

Note: Following the defeat of the Zulus in 1880, Zululand was in an unsettled state. Chief Dinizulu resorted once again to carrying off his neighbour's cattle and committing a number of murders. A warrant was issued for his arrest in 1888 and a column, including a detachment of the North Stafford Regiment, was sent to take him prisoner and saw action. Zululand was proclaimed a British possession on 19th May 1887 and was annexed to Natal on 30th December 1897.
