Military Mail
1897 (18 Jan.) envelope to Sheffield, headed "From No. 3279 Corpl. C. Emery Det. W.R. Regt. Eshowe S Africa", countersigned by Commanding Officer and bearing 1894 1d. dull mauve and carmine neatly cancelled by "ehowe/zululand" double-ring d.s. and showing, on reverse, Durban (30.1) and arrival (22.2) datestamps. Fine and scarce. Photo

Note: With the incorporation of Zululand into Natal on 30th December 1897, its postage stamps were not immediately withdrawn. The Natal Government Gazette on 15th February 1898 announced through a Postal Notice that they would remain on issue at Eshowe Post Office until 30th June 1898 and then withdrawn from sale.

Corporal Emery, serving with a detachment of the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment at Eshowe, was part of a small garrison stationed in Zululand.
