Mount Everest Expeditions
The Fourth Expedition

1936 (27 Apr.) envelope to Mrs Trotter with the original letter from Dr Noel Humphries, bears a good strike of the type G Expedition handstamp marked "Base Camp", the Air Mail etiquette has been crossed through and the reverse with the large oval of the Political Officer, Sikkim partly covered by the "Suffered detention ..." label with manuscript note in red ink, "Rather late now but the envelope may interest", the address side bears G.B. K.E.VIII 1½d. tied by Portsmouth & Southsea machine postmark for 1937 (29 Jan.) and the cover redirected to Jersey.

With a long letter on 1936 Expedition notepaper which includes, "... We reached Base Camp yesterday. Everest looks magnificent but unclimbable! ... As soon as the lower camps are established I shall go onto camp IV at 23,000 ft. with Smythe and Skipton who will make the first attack on the summit" plus other details about the weather and location. There is some sight water damage from its long burial but this does not detract from this important letter, believed to be one of only three to survive with contents. Photo
