Harry Platt Cockbain was born at Manchester in 1907. Having enlisted into the Royal Air Force during the mid 1920's, as an Aircraftman 1st Class (No.359888) he formed one of the small number of men present out in Iraq during the operations against the Akhwan in the Southern Desert from January-June 1928, receiving the rare Southern Desert Iraq clasp to the General Service Medal. Later present out in India, as a Leading Aircraftman he saw service during the Red Shirt Rebellion on the North West Frontier from April 1930-March 1931.

During the Second World War Cockbain, by then a Warrant Officer, was commissioned into the Technical Branch as a Pilot Officer (No.47029) on 6 August 1941, and was employed with the Signals. Promoted to Flying Officer on 1 October 1942, and to temporary Flight Lieutenant on 1 January 1944, he saw service in the Italian theatre towards the end of the conflict. Remaining in the service post-war, Cockbain was initially placed on the Reserve of Officers, but then extended his service in December 1946, before reverting back to the Retired List in December 1950. He died at Hastings in July 1973; sold with copied research.
