The Royal Society of St. George was founded in 1894, aiming to promote English values, traditions and customs. Before this time, similar movements had existed across the Empire, the earliest branch recorded at New York in 1770. Queen Victoria became its first Royal Patron, with each subsequent monarch lending their patronage to the Society. In 1963 the Society received its Royal Charter, with Armorial Bearings granted in 1990. Former Presidents include Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII, even later the Duke of Windsor), Field Marshal Montgomery and the Duke of Devonshire.
