An Interesting Silver Box, A Wedding Gift To His Wife From Major C.J.L. Lyons, 6th Gurkha Rifles, Adorned With His Orders And Decorations
Silver box, by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co., London (Hallmarks for London 1915), 153mm x 53mm x 35mm, embellished with a miniature Order of the Indian Empire and Distinguished Service Order, these gold and enamel, together with his rank insignia, the inner gilt, the front panel finely hand-engraved 'Gallipoli. August-December 1915.' and the inner lid 'To Ethel from Cecil 12th September 1916', maker's mark to base, good very fine

D.S.O. London Gazette 4.11.1915 Major Cecil John Lyons Allanson, 1st Battalion 6th Gurkha Rifles
'For most conspicuous gallantry and marked ability on 9th August, 1915 in leading his Battalion to the attack of Chunuk Bair Ridge, Gallipoli peninsula. Major Allanson, with two companies, reached the summit of the ridge under a very heavy destructive fire from the enemy, where he was wounded by a bayonet thrust. When it became obvious that support could not reach him, he skilfully withdrew his men and notwithstanding the pain from his wound, remained with his battalion throughout the whole day, being the only British Officer left.'

Major Cecil John Lyons Allanson, C.M.G., C.I.E., D.S.O., born Carnarvon, Wales, April 1877; educated at Bedford and Woolwich; commissioned Royal Artillery, 1897; Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, 1899-1902; promoted Brigade Major, 1908; Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, 1909-10; appointed Tutor Guardian to the Maharaja of Hathwa, 1910; Military Secretary to the Governor of Madras, 1912-15; promoted Major, March 1915, Commander of the 1st Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles at Gallipoli, being thrice wounded, recommended for the Victoria Cross and awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his action at Sari Bair Ridge in attempting to claim 'Hill Q'; married Ethel, widow of Edward Temple Patterson, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, 12.9.1916; created a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire, 1916; appointed a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, 1919; Colonel and Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles during the Waziristan Campaign.
