Forming and En Route
1900 (30 Jan.) unstamped envelope from G.V.W. Howard, "D" Battery, RCFA to Quebec, showing a superb strike of the oval-framed "canadian contingent/en route/south africa" datestamp in lilac and manuscript "10" due, the reverse with Ottawa (15.2) and Aylmer (16.2) arrival datestamps. An attractive usage of this rare handstamp on the first recorded date of use. Photo
Note: The Second Contingent embarked on the S.S. "Laurentian" which sailed from Halifax on 20 January 1900 and made a planned stop at St. Vincent, Cape Verde Islands on 31 January. On the day before the ship arrived at St. Vincent , mail to be landed was cancelled by an impression of the "En Route" handstamp by the four postal workers on board. Despite the total of 265 officer's and men on board the "En Route" cachet is rare with only about twenty examples recorded to date
