Line Engraved Essays and Proofs 1856 The Official Imitation 1856 (November) die proof in brick-red on proof paper mounted on thick, soft card of the officially authorised 1d. forgery. Large part and small part of complete designs in a pair (a complete faked stamp was not allowed); some staining of the backing card, though the central piece is fine. Only three pulls of this proof are known (one in the Royal collection and another in the British Postal Museum). This example being the only one in private hands. An extremely rare proof of the upmost philatelic importance. S.G. Spec. DP34 (unpriced) Estimate £ 30,000-40,000 This imitation was ordered by the Board of the Inland Revenue to ascertain whether a skilled engraver could reproduce the design of the 1d. stamp of sufficient quality to deceive the Revenue. Note that the example in the British Postal Museum has been cut down. provenance: ´TES´ Collection, October 1995
