† Great Britain Postal History Newspapers The Times, August 8, 1840, a small notice on page 5, under "The Penny Postage", "It is not generally known to the public, that by a Treasury order every postmaster and letter-receiver, without exception, is bound to sell the postage label stamps to the public at a penny each, whatever number sold, whether a single stamp or more; and the covers at a penny farthing each. This should be universally known - that wherever there is a post-office there is also a depôt for the stamps and covers.".
