† Great Britain Postal History Newspapers The Times, August 3 1840, an article on page 3, "The New Postage" about the House of Commons debating the new postal service. The debate included the times and sailings of ships, the new regulations, as well as a possible discount on the sale of a large number of the new labels. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, who was answering all questions referred to the fact that consideration was being given to the registration of letters to prevent theft and for the carrying of money orders.
