Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Lion 15 July 1798 (Robt. Ripp.), very fine Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Robert Ripp served as Landsman in H.M.S. Lion 64 guns (Captain M.H. Dixon) during her action with four Spanish and French frigates off Carthagena, which included the capture of the 42-gun Santa Dorotea, 15.7.1798. Early in the morning of the latter date Dixon came across the Pomona, Proserpine, Santa Cazilda and the Santa Dorotea and immediately bore up to attack. Despite being greatly outgunned by the combined French and Spanish force the Lion captured the Santa Dorotea seeing off her three consorts in the process. Approximately 23 clasps claimed for this action. Provenance: Glendining June 1946 Spink July 1995 and December 2002
