Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, 4 Novr. 1805, 7th July Boat Service 1809 (William Barrable.), small collector´s number ´937´ stamped on edge at 12 o´clock, good very fine Estimate £ 4,500-5,000 William Barrable served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Revolutionnaire during Strachan´s action, the capture of four French ships-of-the-line, off Ferrol, north coast of Galicia, Spain, 4.11.1805; the French ships were the 80-gun Formidable and the Scorpion, Mont Blanc and Duguay Trouin all of which were 74 guns; the ships, under the command of Rear-Admiral Dumanoir, had escaped after the battle of Trafalgar; four Small Naval Gold Medals were awarded for this action; Barrable later served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Bellerophon when her boats, as part of a force of 17 under Lieutenant Joseph Hawkey, captured or destroyed seven gunboats and twelve merchantmen from a Russian flotilla at anchor under Hango Head, near Percola Point on the south coast of Finland, 7.7.1809. Hawkey was killed by grapeshot whilst attempting to board one of the gunboats. Approximately 34 ´7 July Boat Service 1809´ clasps issued. Provenance: Glendining November 1987
