Postal History
Imperial Post
1899 (25 Nov.) envelope to France bearing C.I.P. 10c. cancelled by Chefoo bilingual c.d.s. in combination with Q.V. 5c. (2) cancelled by Hong Kong c.d.s. (12.1) with I.P.O. small framed tie-print, showing "Ligne N/Paq. Fr. No. 8" c.d.s. (12.2) adjacent. Normally, when sending mail fromChefoo to overseas destinations with a combination of Hong Kong and Chinese stamps, it should pass through Shanghai as an intermediary. In such cases, there should be a Shanghai transit postmark. However, in this particular piece, the Hong Kong stamp bears a direct Hong Kong datestamp, and there is no Shanghai postmark on the mail, the mail did not make landfall in Shanghai but was instead directly transported by ship to Hong Kong. Such a mail route is exceedingly rare.
