Lot: 216

The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $50, specimen overprinted on an issued note, 1.5.1924, serial number O/G 172702, orange, black and pale green, supported arms at upper centre, vignette showing agricultural activities at centre, denomination in English and Chinese at left and right, hand signed signature at lower left, reverse green and black, the old Bank building at centre, 'SPECIMEN' in block letters printed on both sides, punch hole cancellations,
(Pick 44s), PMG 30 Very Fine and most unusual. As an issued note this is the highest grade in the PMG population report and as such extremely rare and highly desirable. It is unclear why specimens were made from issued notes, one can only assume the bank found it convenient to do so in the absence of true specimens. Two main reasons that this note is superb: its condition as an issued note and being an 'expedient' specimen, both characteristics are seen for the first time by the cataloguer. Of the highest rarity if not unique
