China Expeditionary Force
Royal Engineers Balloon Section
1901 (4 Feb.) envelope addressed to Captain A.H.B. Hume, 4th Balloon Section R.E., China Field Force, Peking bearing German Post Office 10pf tied by "shanghai/deutsche post" c.d.s. and redirected "c/o Post Commandant Liu-ka-chao", the reverse bears F.P.O. No.1 (16.2), F.P.O. No.2 (16.2) and a very fine strike of the large, double-circle "balloon section/royal engineers/feb 16" with the day in manuscript. There are some edge faults and staining. A rare cover bearing this elusive Balloon Section handstamp.

Captain Hume was in command of the Balloon Section. This Section was in China between October 1900 and June 1901. The balloons were used for observation and photographing damage caused by the Boxer rebellion. Unfortunately, this Section did not arrive in time to be of much military use
