Uganda Please note that in this section, 1895 (Mar.)-96 (June), S.G. 1-53, the quality of the paper often resulted in the stamps being creased before use. Such creases are therefore not grounds for return 1896 (Nov.) Type-set Issue Covers 1898 (20 Sept.) 2a. F size registered envelope (opened-out) "From G. Carré 27th. Baluchis Dufileh The Nile Valley" "By First Steamer" to U.S.A., the reverse with the stamp impression marked "equatorial provs expedn" and bearing 1a. with thick "1", 2a., 3a, 4a. and 8a., each with manuscript "dufileh 20/9/98", the face panel bearing British East Africa 2 1/2a. cancelled with manuscript "Stamped" between lines. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: The above cover is one of four sent by Dr. F. Carré of the 27th. Baluchi Light Infantry, and the only one addressed to America. At this period the tribes in northern Uganda were fighting each other, the rival tribes being backed by the Protestant and Roman Catholic Missionaries respectively. A small force was therefore sent to restore order and this cover emanates from this punitive expedition. Dufileh was on the Nile about 120 miles north of Wadelai at the south end of the Fola cataract, almost on the Sudan boundary. In 1898-99 the frontier between the Sudan and Uganda had not been properly defined and Dufileh and Wadelai were sometimes thought to belong to the Sudan and at other times to Uganda provenance: Col. J.R. Danson, 1971
