Exchequer Bill, 1720, £100, bearing interest at one penny a day, issued £1 million to aid the South Sea Company, signed by Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, scrollwork at each side, black, right edge has been trimmed to the text totally removing the scrollwork and has been laid down, sometime water damaged with some weakness, ink cancelled, fair and rare; together with the left hand portion of another Exchequer Bill of similar date, also signed by Halifax, laid down on the same backing but in better condition overall, fine (2) Estimate £ 250 Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715), politician. Member of the House of Commons, Commisioner of the Treasury, Privy Councillor . Elevated to Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1694 and oversaw the major recoinage in that year. Created Baron Halifax in 1700. Negotiated Union with Scotland in 1706. Created Earl of Halifax in 1720.
