Sussex sustained multiple injuries and suffered from the effect of blast. The plant on which he was employed was situated at Crabtree Manor, Manor Way, Erith, Kent. Sussex´´s gallant conduct as mentioned in the citation was performed after a German air raid on the plant, 29.11.1940, and the Company congratulated him thus, ´´The Management desire to express their appreciation of the commendable manner in which you continued to carry on with your duties on the occasion of enemy action at the Erith Works on 29th November.
